Athens CASA/GAL Programs
Athens CASA has been serving local children since 1993. Athens CASA is governed by Athens County Juvenile Court but leans on the support of an auxillary non-profit organization of the same name. Currently, Athens CASA is utilizing 28 volunteers to advocate for more than 100 children. Judge Robert W. Stewart works closely with the program to appoint appropriate CASAs to each case in need. A Court Appointed Special Advocate is an important part of every local juvenile court case where children have been abused or neglected. National research shows that children represented by a CASA are more likley to do better in school, have fewer placement moves, spend an average of 7.5 months less time in foster care and are less likely to re-enter the foster care system.

APJN was established in 1984 during a nuclear freeze campaign by a visionary director of the United Campus Ministry at Ohio University in Athens, Ohio. Since then, the organization has grown from a volunteer organization to employing one staff person and serving a larger area. APJN educates, trains, and builds coalitions among local and regional groups and institutions. Although APJN began as a peace and justice networking organization, over the years, it has tried to address the root causes of violence and militarism. APJN’s work for peace thus begins with providing education to respect diversity, increasing people’s knowledge and skills to solve problems, and fostering an independent, creative and critical thinking environment. The central ethos, however, remains the same, securing peace and social justice for all.
